1
Confirm your computer's video outputs
Check the back or sides of your laptop/desktop for available ports. You need at least two video outputs.
  • Laptops: Usually 1 HDMI or USB-C. A dock may be required for the second monitor.
  • Desktops: Dedicated GPU usually has 2–4 ports.
  • If only one port, a USB-C hub or DisplayLink dock unlocks dual output.
Tip: Search "[your model] dual monitor support" online to confirm what's officially supported.
2
Choose and connect the right cables
  • DisplayPort: Best for high refresh rates (144Hz+) and 4K.
  • HDMI 2.0/2.1: Great for 4K@60Hz. Very common on monitors and TVs.
  • USB-C / Thunderbolt: Single cable for power + video. Check monitor supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
  • VGA/DVI: Older standard — avoid for new setups.
Tip: Buy cables rated for your target resolution and refresh rate. Cheap cables may not support 4K@60Hz.
3
Physically position the monitors
  • Primary monitor directly in front of you, at arm's length (~50–70 cm).
  • Secondary monitor to the side at about 30° angle.
  • Top of both screens at or slightly below eye level.
  • Use a dual monitor arm to match heights and free up desk space.
Tip: If one monitor is for reference (docs, Slack) put it to the side. Keep primary monitor straight ahead.
4
Configure display settings in your OS
  • Windows: Right-click desktop → Display settings → Arrange displays. Set primary display.
  • macOS: System Settings → Displays → Arrangement. Drag white bar to set primary. Disable Mirror.
  • Linux: Settings → Displays. Arrange and set primary. Apply.
  • Set each monitor to its native resolution.
Tip: Use "Extend desktop" — not "Mirror" — to get two independent workspaces.
5
Calibrate brightness, colour & scaling
  • Match brightness — open a white window and compare both screens side by side.
  • Adjust colour temperature (~6500K for daylight, ~4000K for warm light).
  • In Windows, set DPI scaling per display if they differ in size/resolution.
  • On macOS, use MonitorControl app to sync brightness from menu bar.
Tip: Use the OSD (on-screen display) buttons on each monitor to fine-tune brightness and colour.
6
Set up productivity workflows
  • Windows: Win+Arrow keys to snap windows. PowerToys FancyZones for advanced layouts.
  • macOS: Rectangle app for window snapping across screens.
  • Pin communication apps (Slack, Teams, email) to the secondary monitor.
  • Keep primary monitor for focused work tasks.
Tip: Set your browser to always open on a specific monitor using window manager tools.
